JJAK! (Behind the Meme), is a “Starter Pack Kit” with a book, zines and a poster. The book includes texts from research of how the “slap” phenomenon in K-Dramas came to be, the common stereotypes/tropes of women in K-Dramas, and how it ties into how women are perceived in South Korea.
The project brings light to the societal issues and how that connects to how humor is created—showing that memes aren’t just 1-dimensional. The zines play more on the satire, packaged in fake kimchi jars (made out of clear vinyl). The content of the zines and poster covers the most common stereotypes of women, such as the hysterical wife, the petty aunt, the “other woman”, and the rude mother-in-law.
